I grew up in Eastern NC, living in Kinston and Atlantic Beach, enjoying fishing, surfing, basketball, setting type and operating printing presses in my free time. They say “the apple never falls far from the tree.” Well I’m here to tell you there’s truth in those words. My grandfather proudly called himself a “printer’s devil”, even after mastering the craft. He held just about every position possible in the printing and newspaper businesses, and enjoyed every minute of it. As for my grandmother, let’s just say that my favorite photo, which sits on my desk, is of her hand feeding an old 12 x 18 Chandler & Price platen press. Oh, did I mention my father started our printing division, one of the first “quick printing” businesses in North Carolina, after visiting a cutting – edge print shop in San Francisco in the early 60’s. Now you understand why I love everything about typography, lithography, photography and graphic design – it’s in my genes.

It should come as no big surprise, that after graduating from college with – you guessed it- a BS degree in Printing Management, and later a BA in Philosophy (became curious what fonts Plato would have liked and why), that I ended up in the print and digital marketing business. Thirty plus years later, I’ve traded in my surfboard and the break off of Cape Hatteras for a three- weight fly rod and a small trout stream in the Blue Ridge Parkway, but I’m still fascinated by great design, whether created for print or digital media. At the time it seemed to be just a simple homework assignment, the type of assignment most fifth graders complete and never think about again, but not me. My response to the question: “What do you want to do or be when you grow up”? Set the wheels of life and my destiny into motion all at the tender age of ten.

I wrote: “I want to work at my father’s store. I want to work there when I grow up. I want to be the boss. I would have fun working there. I want to sell lots of stuff. That’s what I want to do when I grow up.”

You see, my father was operating a successful office products company during the time of this writing assignment. It would have been possible with a BS degree in Business to purse other opportunities and industries, but how do you resist the thoughts of a ten-year- old boy who knew exactly what he wanted to do and be when he grew up? So, here I am, four decades later, the boss of the company that my father and grandfather built, having fun selling lots of stuff.
